The four schools are co-educational day schools catering for children in the 11-18 age group. A zoning system is in operation and children are normally expected to attend the school appropriate to their place of residence. Because of the zoning arrangement, a place cannot be reserved for a child until he or she has arrived in Hong Kong and been interviewed by the school serving his or her zone.

For a child to qualify for entry to the schools, one of the parents should be a resident tax-payer in Hong Kong. There are no formal entrance examinations but children are interviewed and usually given a test to make sure that they have a sufficient command of English to benefit from the type of education offered. The demand for places, however, is heavy and no guarantee of immediate admission can be given. It is advisable for parents to contact either the ESF Central Office at 43B Stubbs Road, Hong Kong, Tel. 574 2351 on or before arrival in Hong Kong, or the school directly (if place of residence is known), to determine the possibilities for the admission of their children. furthermore, parents of students in Secondary 4,5,6 or 7 should seek advice directly from secondary schools on the availability of Public Examination option courses.

As in the junior schools, the staff are fully qualified, possessing British or equivalent professional qualifications. The curriculum followed is broadly similar to that in schools in the United Kingdom. The courses offered lead to the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) examinations in year 5 and to GCE Advanced level examinations in year 7. There is also a wide range of extracurricular activities.

The school fees at present are HK$18,100 and HK$30,100 per annum for junior and secondary schools respectively. The schools are attended by English-speaking children of many nationalities, resulting in a great diversity of race, faith and culture which gives the schools an interntional character.

PRIVATE SCHOOLS

There are a number of private schools offering places at primary and secondary levels suitable for English-speaking children of all races. These include schools running on the British, the American/Canadian, the French and the German patterns.
