Education Facilities for English-Speaking Children
Education for English-speaking children is provided through schools operated by the English Schools Foundation and some private schools.
THE ENGLISH SCHOOLS FOUNDATION (ESF)
The ESF was established by Government Ordinance in 1967. It operates at present nine junior schools and four secondary schools for children whose first language is English.
Junior Schools
Education for children aged five to 11 in the foundation is provided by a total of nine primary schools (known as junior schools). The staff of the schools are fully qualified, holding British or equivalent professional qualifications. The schools are co-educational day schools and the education provided is similar in content and method to that available in schools in Britain. The schools do not prepare children directly for the Common Entrance Examination. Pupils may, however, be entered privately for the Common entrance Examination and arrangement can be made for them to sit the examination at certain schools.
Admission to these schools for classes other than Class One is permitted at any time during the school year subject to places being available. For Class One the official admission is September for children who have reached the age of five or will be five by December 31 of that year.
Entry to this class is also permitted during term time provided there is a vacancy and the child is eligible by age for admission. Currently, provision exists for early entry to Class One at Easter for children reaching the age of five between January 1 and June 30 in that year. However, this facility is subject to schools having accommodation to house the additional pupils and parents should not presume that they have a right to early admission.
