Dear Sir Hugh,
DRAFT
852 868 5074 P.03
Thank you for your letter of 17 April 1990
seeking clarification of the Hong Kong Government visa
policy on behalf of your constituent, Mr J L Brennan.
For political and security reasons, the Hong Kong
Government has always adopted a restrictive policy on the
entry of nationals from East European countries,
irrespective of their places of residence. Under this
policy, social visits are not normally allowed.
In her application dated 21 February 1990, a
Mrs Jolanta Pieniazek Majerska and her son, Roger Majerski
applied for Hong Kong visas for a holiday of 13 days. She
made no mention that she was the wife of Mr Brennan and
that she intended to accompany him on a business trip to
Hong Kong, In the absence of such information, the
application was refused,
It was not until late March that the relevant
connections were known when additional information was
provided. Unfortunately, there was insufficient time for
the Hong Kong Immigration authorities to process her
application, as Mrs Brennan intended to leave United
Kingdom in early April and this type of application
normally takes four weeks to finalizė.
