e) Future Consulate General
Mr Leung asked about the future British Consulate General in Hong Kong and whether its entry clearance section would handle visa applications from southern Chinese provinces. He also asked about the possibility of his office staff being considered for employment as locally engaged members of staff of the Consulate General. Mr Montgomery replied that 1997 was some way off but we were planning for a large visa-issuing office. Its exact responsibilities had yet to be determined. We employed local staff in all our overseas posts and would certainly require LE staff in the proposed C-G. Relevant work experience would understandably be a valuable asset when applying for such positions.
