The Corporatisation To establish RTHK as an of RTHK

The 24-hour Relay of the BBC World Service in English

Broadcasts by TDM

independent statutory public broadcasting corporation, under its own Board of Governors. The new corporation will be funded primarily through Government subvention.

The coverage of the BBC World Service in English was extended from its 14 1/2 hours to 24 hours per day on RTHK Radio 6 w.e.f. 1.1.90.

TDM has plans to boost its transmission power so that its broadcasts are receivable in a wide area outside Macau. This is of concern to both Hong Kong and China.

Work is in progress on the detailed legislative, staffing and financial arrangements. It is aimed to establish the Board of Governors at the beginning of 1991. However, RTHK will remain a government department during the transition period 1990-91. RTHK should be disestablished and the financial arrangements completed by the start of the financial year 1991-92.

The new 24-hour service is now firmly established on 675 kHz. Good progress is being made on finalizing the formal agreement with the BBC on provision of the relay.

Talks have been held with

Macau Government

representatives, who have been told that TDM's plans are not acceptable to Hong Kong. Formal response from Macau Government awaited.
