Because of Hong Kong's inextricable economic link with China and the adverse impact on Hong Kong's trade and economy resulting from the latter's loss of MFN status in the US, the Hong Kong government and the private sector have been making representations to the US Administration and Legislature drawing attention to Hong Kong's interest and concerns in the continuation of MFN status for China.

Hong Kong's status in the context of COCOM after 1997] has to be resolved. Hong Kong is not a member of COCOM but because UK is, Hong Kong is currently enjoying uninhibited access

Both FCO and DTI are supportive of HK's stance on COCOM. The intention is to hold trilateral discussions with the US, Japan et al. Action currently rests with DTI.
