Wives and widows of At the Policy Debate on 9 ex-servicemen

November 1988, the Senior Member of Leg Co requested HKG to make a
representation to HMG in support of the granting British citizenship to wives and widows of ex-servicemen.
Entry to Hong Kong from China for settlement purposes subject to one-way permit scheme implemented by China. There has been criticism that the scheme fails to cater for family reunification. However, immigration statistics show that of the 27,000 arrivals in 1989, over 24,000 joined spouses and parents in Hong Kong.
Case is still with FCO.
Need to maintain control of Chinese residents entering Hong Kong.
