P. 2

There's no sense of who Lord Caithness is, what he enjoys, what he laughs at, where he feels at home. There are no points of reference for the average person and the magazine editor believes that people in Hong Kong want to get to know him. As it's impossible for him to be in Hong Kong that much, the best way is to read about him, and preferably in as many of his own words as possible - hence the request.

You mentioned that the Minister might fear that he would be stitched up in the interview. This is hardly in anybody's interests, least of all my agency's. Our reputation is based on honesty and if we went around knocking our interviewees for six we'd pretty soon be out of business - people simply wouldn't talk to us any more. It also simply isn't in the style of the magazine, as you can check in back issues held at the Hong Kong Government's London offices.

If the Minister does agree to an interview he'll be in fine company. Recent interviewees for the Me section include Lord Carrington, Akio Morita (the chap who created Sony), Sir Denys Roberts, Bernard Levin, () Luciano Pavarotti, David Newbigging and Dame Edna Everidge.

I hope the information above is of use. If you or the Minister have any further questions, please telephone or fax. I look forward to nearing from you.

Kind regards
