Memo:
Dear Ian
As promised the other day, here follows the reasoning behind the South China Morning Post Magazine's request for an interview with Lord Caithness. My apologies for not sending it sooner, but I wanted to see what the SCMP had on file already first.
They really are very keen indeed and have told me they will put back the anniversary issue of the mag to November 4 if this will help with any time constraints that the Minister may have. Ideally they would like to put him on the cover, as they did for an interview with John Major for the first issue when he was Foreign Secretary. The interview would be in an At Home style, which the SCMP Mag styles Me. The format is fairly jovial, centring on home life, interests outside politics and so-on. If Lord Caithness agrees to an interview but doesn't have the time until past the anniversary deadline, the magazine would still like to run the piece later on.
From the cuttings the magazine has faxed over to me on Lord Caithness, I see what they mean when they say they have no real image of the man. He comes across as a well-meaning, modest and pleasant enough fellow but other than that it's all rather characterless.
