AsiaSat I, will beam 12 channels down on Hong Kong; 6 of the 12 AsiaSat transponders are reserved by Hutchison, 1 by EZTV. The remainder are booked reportedly for telecommunication purposes by several Asian countries. Intelsat and other satellites transmit some 24 channels of which only a few are for general reception only.
We have assessed that a 6-channel package consisting of 3 subtitled English channels (News/Sports, Documentaries and Movies), 1 Music Channel, 1 Cantonese Movie channel and 1 other Asian language channel would generate a strong demand, particularly if it were free. Because of the high English content it would penetrate the better educated up-market sectors. With Chinese subtitles on the English channels and with a Cantonese Movie channel this demand would extend to the Cantonese speaking market as well.
Bilingual and English Speaking Sectors
The market for SMATV would predominately consist of the English speakers and the bilingual sector.
2.5 Please note that the probability that at least one
member in a household is bilingual is substantially higher than the figures shown below.
