New Technologies Training Fund
Introduction

The Working Party on Training in New Technologies appointed in April 1988 to advise the Government on the need to introduce additional measures in manpower training with the object of facilitating investment in manufacturing production that is dependent on the absorption of new technologies and, if the need can be established, to make proposals on implementation.

The Working Party submitted its report in January Its proposals have been endorsed by the Industry Development Board and accepted by the Government.

Training Scheme

As recommended by the Working Party, the Government has agreed to establish a scheme of training in new technologies to be administered by the Vocational Training Council.
involves the creation of a revolving fund from which loans would be made to manufacturers to finance the training of their employees in new technologies through local extension courses or overseas working attachments.

It
A manufacturer will decide which technology to go for and what type of training would be appropriate. The Government and the Hong Kong Productivity Council will play facilitating roles.
The attention of businesses will be drawn to a published list of beneficial new technologies that would be supported under the scheme (see Annex). The authority operating the scheme will review the list from time to time to keep it up to date.

The Hong Kong Productivity Council and the Industry Department will assist businesses who have identified а specific technology to find suitable training opportunities either in Hong Kong or abroad. It is envisaged that local courses, including relevant extension courses provided by the tertiary institutions and the Hong Kong Productivity Council, would be appropriate for the training of technologists, where the training can be delivered via conventional means (
