HK SCHOLARSHIPS

We have just had the first round of scholarship interviews and selected 19 possible candidates from a field of 36, mostly undergraduates. One undergraduate was accepted on the spot having been interviewed by both boards on the same day. The other 18 will come for final interview on 24 February, four postgraduates and 14 undergraduates. Five of these (1 postgraduate) are almost certainties. British Council and ourselves will be pressing for as many of the others to be taken as possible.
With British Council support, I argued again this year for the unspent funds from previous years to be used up. We have at last won our point and the Secretariat (new staff) admitted that they had been over conservative in their budgeting with a resulting loss to Hong Kong. We shall need to do some careful sums but I am hopeful of at least 10 people receiving awards and hope we can take all the postgraduates. I will write again after the final board in February.
I understand from British Council that you are now pressing for a resolution of the management of the S K Tang bequest monies. This will be most welcome. If these funds together with our own money are firmly within our control it will help us in committee here.
