Decision 5
The tertiary institutions, in consultation with the UPGC, should consider :
(a) as a matter of priority, the
introduction of joint admission procedures;
(b) the possibility of extending
academic teaching time; and
(c) the adoption of a credit unit
system
(a) Joint Admissions Scheme (JAS)
All six tertiary institutions will participate in a JAS being designed for first-degree curricula, on the following bases :
(i) an interim scheme, to be
introduced in 1990-91, invol- ving offers at Secondary 6 level, pending the achieve- ment of a common entry point after Secondary 7 (see Item 1 above); and
(ii) a final scheme, to be intro-
duced on achievement of a common post-Secondary 7 entry point, with firm offers made after the publication of 'A' level examination results
This particular decision is intended to facilitate the implementation of the revised structure of tertiary education. The position regarding each of the components is as follows :
(a) JAS
The UPGC is generally content with the proposed forms of the Scheme subject to confirmation by that institutions that -
(i)
applications will be processed through a central clearing-house, to ensure that applicants do not accept more than one offer;
(ii) under the interim scheme, a
reasonable number of
places will be set aside for allocation to Secondary 7 students (to take into account 'A' level results); and
