Description of Voyage
GROUP I

Boatmaster: TRAN TRONG QUYỀN
This exodus was organized by a Vietnamese in name of PHAM VAN QUANG who lived at 243 LY THUONG KIET, HAI PHONG, N. VN. This organizer charged each person 0.3 to 0.5 tael of gold and arranged a motorized boat sailing to JIANG PING (1) by the boatmaster from HAI PHONG on 01-11-89. The rest of 90 members were escorted by couriers in small groups which left HAI PHONG on different dates from 01-11-89 to 21-11-89. The couriers led them to DONG XING) of China by land via HAI NINH without going through any official check point. The boat arrived at JIANG PING (1) on 03-11-89 and waited for the rest of the members from DONG XING. They had to stay there until 01-12-89 because of engine problem. During their stay, inspection was conducted by PRC officials. When they arrived FANG CHENG () on the following day, they experienced engine problem again. Therefore, they had to stay for 3 weeks during which they could buy food and daily necessities from the market and they underwent PRC examination again. On 29-12-89, they came to QI SHA) where they were stranded for one and a half month until 10-02-90 because of engine breakdown and unfavourable weather. As they had spent all their money, they had to live on alms from local residents. Then they sailed to DENG IOU JIAO (K
) for an overnight rest after
and ZHA PO (). They later called at Macao on 22-02-90 and were allowed to windshelter for 4 days during which they met a 8-person boat (Group II, III and IV). For safty reason, this

8 persons were arranged on board their boat by Macao Marine Police and were towed to open, seas on 26-02-90. Owing to strong wind and heavy mist, they had to berth their boat at GUI SHAN DAO
) which believed to be one of the small islands among the WAN SHAO QUAN DAO By t ). Shortly before their departure on 28-02-90, PRC officials conveyed 8 Vietnamese (Group V) to that island and ordered that they be taken along since their junk had sunk. Eventually, this combined group of 107 arrived at Hong Kong in the evening of the same day.
GROUP II
Informant: LY SIU PINH
This group of 5 was escorted by informant's father from HO CHI MINH on 12-02-90. They took train to HA NOI and then to HAI NINH by bus. Upon arrival on 17-02-90, they paid 80,000 Dongs per head to a Vietnamese who guided them to cross the Sino-Viet border through hill path and came to DONG XING() of Chiga. Thereafter, they took bus to JINGKOU OVERSEAS CHINESE FARM, SAN SHUI XIAN, GUANG DONG

> where their relatives lived. Through their introduction, they came to know a man DANG KIM DUONG & ) (who was the ECVII of Group III) as well as the organizer of this trip from China to Hong Kong. The organizer contacted the parents of the minor ECVII and minor CII (Group IV) of the same farm. They contributed a total sum of 0.5 tael of gold for the escape boat which subsequently set sail on 19-02-90. Because of engine problem and adverse weather, they spent 4 days to reach Macao. Thereafter, they joined GroupI until their arrival in Hong Kong.
