Boatmaster : NGUYEN THE PHUOC

The three persons, together with the two ECVIIs of Group II, fled HO CHI MINH CITY, S.VN on 4-3-90. Two days later, they reached HAI PHONG by bus and made a 3-day stopover. On 9-3-90, they came to HAI NINH via HONG GAI and immediately approached the border check point. Each of them had to pay 800 Dongs and RMB $1 to the Vietnamese and Chinese officials respectively before they

were allowed to cross the border. The whole party reached DONG XING (REAL) by boat and took a bus to FANG CHENG (7) on the same day. They had once been discovered by the Chinese officials and they were fined RMB $70 for illegal entry from Vietnam. However, they were permitted to continue their journey after paying the penalty. They then stayed there for 3 days so as to look for onward facilities. On 13-3-90, they arrived at ZHEN JIANG ( 1 ) and took another bus to JIANG MUN (21 P on the

) next day.

There, they stayed at their relative's house for about 2 weeks. On 27-3-90, they managed to purchase a motorized sailing junk at TAN ZHOU (t) at a cost of RMB $2,500 and set sail immediately.
