STATE OF CRIME FOR OVERALL HONG KONG

CALENDAR YEAR 1989

The total number of crimes reported to police in 1989 was

81 808, an increase of 3.3% compared with 79 184 recorded in 1988.

(See Appendix)

2.

The crime rate which is defined as the number of crime

cases per 100 000 population was 1 419.9, representing an increase of 1.9% compared with 1988.

3.

Compared with 1988, there were noticeable increases in

the offences of taking conveyance without authority, wounding, serious

assault, robbery and unlawful possession whilst a significant drop was

recorded for offences of pickpocketing, possession of D.D. for

trafficking and shoptheft.
