BRIEF TO THE EXCO BY COMMISSIONER OF POLICE (OCTOBER, 1990)
GENERAL SITUATION
1.
There was a total of 7 789 crimes reported to the Police in
October, as against 7 439 in September. In terms of daily rate, overall
crime increased by 1.3% to 251.3 cases compared with 248.0 cases recorded in
September. Compared with the same period last year, the level of crime was
# up by 6.7%.
The total number of violent crimes' in October was 1 598,
accounting for 20.5% of overall crime and representing a daily rate of 51.6
cases. This daily average was a drop of 4.4% over September and a decrease
of 2.5% on the same period last year. Analysing by type of violent crime,
robbery made up 40.7% of total violent crime and wounding and serious
assault, 34.1%. In October there was a notable decrease in the offence of
robbery (-53 cases) but a noticeable increase was recorded for the offence
of burglary (+103 cases).

The general trends for selected specific crimes for the past three
years are shown in the charts at Annexes I

Robbery

There were 650 robberies in October, representing 21.0 cases a
day. This daily average was a decrease of 10.5% over the previous month and
a drop of 2.5% compared with the daily average of 21.5 for the previous
twelve months.

Of the robberies which occurred during the month, 32 cases involved the use of genuine firearms or pistol like objects, compared with 45 in the preceding month and the monthly average of 32 for the previous
twelve months. Three of the cases in October were confirmed as involving
genuine firearms, compared with 9 cases in September. The monthly average of genuine firearm robberies for the last twelve months was 5. There were
322 robberies which involved the use of genuine firearms or pistol like objects in the first ten months of this year, compared with 204 in the
corresponding period last year.
