The time frame of the incident cannot be narrowed any further than between about 1030 on 1 June 1990, when the building was checked and found to be intact and 1130 on 4 June 1990 when the damage was discovered. No shot was heard.
Two similar incidents have occurred in the area (on 24/12/89 and 26/1/90). Different weapons were used on each of the three occasions but it remains possible that they could have been committed by the same culprit using different weapons.
Ballistics reports indicate that the bullet was probably fired from a location higher and to the right (i.e. NE/NNE) of the building. The weapon used could have been a 0.38 special, 0.357 magnum, 9mm parabellum or 380 auto. These are not normally issued to police or other disciplinary services.
The Government Chemist's report in respect of evidence found at the scene, and of salivary/blood group analysis on two cigarette stubs found on the top of the staircase leading to the rooftop of Queen Elizabeth Stadium, remains outstanding.
Checks are being made on arms licenses held within Hong Kong. Initial checks revealed that a 0.38 special revolver owned by a resident of a nearby block was secured at The Royal Hong Kong Regiment Armoury at the time of the incident.
On 21 June 1990 a door to door enquiry operation was mounted in the area. 1686 persons were questioned at 346 premises. All other premises in the area have since been checked.
Further action to be taken will include production of the Goverment Chemist's report, a complete check of arms licence holders and fingerprint tests on letters sent to the HK media.
