My Government have welcomed the generally free and fair manner in which voting took place in Burma and called for the early restoration of democratic government there. They have continued to work for a comprehensive political political settlement of the Cambodian conflict, and have continued to play an active role in developing relations between the EC and ASEAN.

My Goverment welcomed the extension of democratic government in Latin America, notably to Chile and Nicaragua. They welcome the re-establishment of diplomatic relations with Argentina, which was acheived without compromising our sovereignty over the Falkland Islands. My Government have worked to promote confidence in Hong Kong, building on the foundation of the Sino-British Joint Declaration.

My Government have contributed to the review of the future role of the Commonwealth as decided by Heads of Government at Kuala Lumpur.

My Government have abolished visas for Argentina and the German

Democratic Republic [and Hungary and Czechoslovakia).

My Government have continued their vigorous efforts to combat international terrorism. They welcomed the recent release of hostages from Lebanon and have continued their efforts to secure the release of all the remaining hostages.

Recognising the importance of international cooperation in tackling every aspect of the drugs problem, my Government convened the World Ministerial Drugs Summit in April, and have given practical support to other governments, particularly in Colombia. They have concluded agreements to confiscate drug traffickers' funds with a further five governments.
