Dear
Work Programme
Thank you for your letter of 6th July 1990 and for sight of the latest work programme attached thereto.
I note that it is intended to make submissions to the Standing Committee in respect of the Police Pay Scale in September and November. I presume that the former date relates to Junior Police Officers whilst the latter date concerns the pay scales of the officer ranks. I would be grateful for confirmation that this is the
case.
I must comment that I find it most regrettable that the SCDS have found it impossible to bring forward the very important subject of the review of police pay to an earlier date, and will get around to dealing with only the first stage in September, some six months after the Force put in its submission. This will, I am afraid, further strengthenthe impression within the Force that the SCDS neither fully appreciates the seriousness of the situation, nor the strength of police officers' feelings on the subject.
On another matter, you note at paragraph 4 of your letter that adjustments may be required to the time frames depending, among other things, on the speed with which supplementary information is provided. Every effort has been made by my staff to ensure that your deadlines are adhered to when supplementary information is requested but I must emphasize that there must be a degree of common-sense used when asking for such information.
