Points to make

(i)

EXPATRIATE WIVES

(visit)

ра

-

Home Secretary has given assurance in Parliament that widowed spouses of expatriates would be allowed to settle in the UK, and that a register would be set up to allow spouses

to establish their eligibility for settlement in the UK.

- We have been discussing with the Hong Kong authorities

arrangements for a Register of Expatriates' spouses.

Announcement expected soon. Spouses will then be able to

apply for a place on the register.

Expect to be ready to implement very shortly.

(ii) CONSULAR REPRESENTATION IN HONG KONG

-

Long-standing policy for interests of expatriate British citizens resident in Dependent Territories to be looked

after by the local Government acting on behalf of HKG.

- Not aware of any evidence that this is not done efficiently. Hong Kong Immigration Department officials are well versed in Diplomatic Service Procedures, are bilingual

and serve expatriates very well.
