With the growth of imports slower than that of exports the visible trade balance moved into surplus of HK$ 7.7. billion, compared to a deficit of HK$5.7 billion in 1988. Preliminary estimates predict a surplus on invisibles of HK$33.6 billion in
1989.
10. For many years Hong Kong's exports to the UK have exceeded British exports to Hong Kong. However, Hong Kong is now, after Japan, Britain's largest market in the Far East and in 1989 the UK's 17th largest export market worldwide. British exports to Hong Kong in 1989 totalled £1,112 million (1988: £1,031 million), making it the 19th most important market. British imports from Hong Kong in 1988 totalled £2,037 million (1988: £1,788 million). A substantial proportion of British imports from Hong Kong in recent years have consisted of textiles and clothing.
