VISIT OF GOVERNOR TO WESTERN EUROPE
1.
Mr Yaxley telephoned me yesterday to say that the Governor of Hong Kong would be returning to Hong Kong via London after his European tour. In practice, this meant that he would be stopping over at Gatwick for 3 hours on
19 October, from 1700 to 2000 hrs.
2.
The purpose of Mr Yaxley's message was to alert us in case there were any papers that we wanted to have sent to the Governor at this time. But it occured to me that this brief stopover could provide the opportunity for a meeting with the Governor, if it was thought that that would be necessary or appropriate.
3. In practice, however, any meaningful meeting is likely to be impossible to arrange. Lord Caithness will be on his way to the South Pacific. As far as a meeting with officials is concerned, Mr McLaren will in any case have an opportunity to have a good talk with the Governor at the end of the month; and you yourself saw Sir D Wilson in Hong Kong quite recently.
