Study Visit to Sichuan for Chinese Language Students

Professor Liu has just provided the attached proposal for the trip to Sichuan. You will notice that the total figure is up on last year. I have discussed this with Samantha Eldred, who was on the 1989 visit, and offer the following comments.
2. This visit, as proposed, is 40% longer. Last year we lost three or four days days due to problems with visas and air tickets. This increases the cost.
3. I am not convinced that two teachers from Chinese University need to accompany our students. One should be enough. Professor Liu's theory is that the students should have the maximum possible exposure to spoken Chinese. Miss Eldred tells me that last year after a day or so the two CU teachers, not unnaturally, spent a lot of time talking to one
One teacher might well be compelled to stick more clo to the students, (of whom there will of course only be thr è rather than four, as on the first occasion). Cutting down to one teacher would produce a worthwhile saving of about £750.

4. The figure for accommodation (HK$350 per day) is too high. Peking Embassy staff on visits to the provinces budget less than $300 per day, and have single rooms in joint venture hotels. Last year,
our students shared rooms in simple Chinese hotels and ate ordinary local food. On this basis, we might wish to suggest a reduction.
