SECRETARY OF STATE'S VISIT TO HONG KONG 19-22 JANUARY 1991
This minute commissions briefing for this visit, to reach me no later than Tuesday, 11 December 1990 please.
The visit to Hong Kong follows on immediately after the Secretary of State's visit to Japan and this request for briefing is, for consistency, based on identical lines to that of my colleague Alan Murray in his minute of 26 November (not to all). In order to submit to the Secretary of State before the Christmas break I should be grateful for briefing by Tuesday, 11 December please.
The main purpose of the visit will be to explore progress on the airport project and other related infrastructural developments, and to promote the cause of UK companies pursuing this business. The visit will also provide a further opportunity to emphasise the UK's continuing commitment to Hong Kong's economic development, and our long term confidence in Hong Kong as a major commercial and financial centre, as an entrepot for the East Asia Region and as a gateway to Southern China. A copy of a proposed programme outline is attached. I attach an annex detailing the briefs required and should be grateful if briefing could be provided in the following formats:
