STRUCTURE
The International Democrat Union (IDU) is the umbrella organisation for the European Democrat Union (EDU), the Pacific Democrat Union (PDU) and the Caribbean Democrat Union (CDL). The IDU was founded in London in June 1983; the EDU in Salzburg in April 1978; the PDU in Tokyo in June 1982; and the CDU in Kingston in January 1986.
The governing body of the IDU is the Party Leaders' Conference. consisting of the chairmen or leaders of Member-Parties, which takes place every two years, Between such meetings, the IDU is run by its Executive Committee which meets every six months.
The Executive Committee is composed of the Chairman and Executive Secretaries of the IDU. EDU and PDU, and the Treasurers and Deputy Chairman and Vice- Chairmen of the IDU – although any Member-Party is entitled to participate in their meetings. The Committee is empowered to set up Standing Committees and Ad Hoc Groups in various areas, of which there are currently two: the Sending Committee on Foreign Affairs, and the Ad Hoc Group on Southern Africa. The day-to-day administration of the Union is looked after by the Executive Secretary and a small secretariat based in London,
The governing bodies of the EDU, PDU and CDU are annual meetings of the respective leaders. Between these, the organisations are run by Steering Committees. consisting of the secretary-generals
or international secretaries of the Member-Parties. The EDU has mther more subject committees. due to the greater political and geographical unity of Western Europe. The CDU cooperates very closely on organisation questions. The EDU is run on a day-to-day basis by its Executive Secretary and the secretariat based in Vienna, the PDU by its Executive Secretary and a secretariat based in Canberra: and the CDU by its Executive Secretary and a secretariat based in Kingston. Membership of the IDU is open to all parties within the EDU. PDU and CDU, and for parties outside these geographical amas, on an individual basis. There is also un Associate Status available for like- minded international organisations and parties who wish to have consulttive SERUS.
