Dear Rosemary,
2nd August 1990
Although you may have now heard this from other sources, write to confirm that the Archbishop will be paying brief visits to Malaysia, Korea and Hong Kong, September 22nd to October 3rd. His purposes in going are to consecrate a new Bishop of Sabah in East Malaysia on September 25th; to celebrate the centenary of the Anglican Church in Korea on September 29th/30th; and, to pay a private visit to the Governor of Hong Kong and Lady Wilson on October 1st/2nd. He will also be staying in a hotel in Singapore for the nights of September 23rd and 28th, but only for purposes of transit to and from Sabah. The Anglican Bishop of Seoul, Korea, has I understand had contact with our Ambassador there and the Ambassador has offered the Archbishop accommodation for the nights of September 28th/29th/30th, which we have indicated we would be happy to accept. The Archbishop will be travelling to Korea and Hong Kong with Mrs Runcie, and for the whole journey with myself and his chaplain, Canon Graham James.
I would be grateful if once again your office were able to help with some briefs. We would welcome some general advice on Malaysia, especially the State of Sabah where we shall be, Korea and Hong Kong. It is expected that we shall call on the Governor and Chief Minister in Sabah and on the President in Korea. I would be grateful for any personal biographical detail that you may have on these people, and a note too of the Ambassador in Korea, and of any UK representation there may be in Sabah. Sir David Wilson is an old friend of the Archbishop and we have visited him on previous occasions.
I hope it may be possible please to have this material by Wednesday, 12th September.
