PS/MrWaldejoue P3/MrMande Mr Tomhys Mr Fmritahu, On the 4th October I wrote to John Major about Mr Mclaren.

an invitation to visit Beijing to take part in a Seminar Francis Maude replied on the 17th October and, in the light of his letter, I agreed to attend. On my way to China I spent a few days in Hong Kong and had a very useful talk with the Governor about the developing situation between Hong Kong and China. Apart from the Seminar itself, Npm we also had a couple of hours each with Premier Li Peng and General Secretary Jiang Zemin. I was able to raise

the matter of Hong Kong on a number of occasions, particularly at the meeting with Li Peng and I thought that you might like to have a copy of the note which was taken at the time.

On another subject, I shall be making a private visit to South Africa in February and expect to be meeting Pik Botha. You may remember that I was a member of the unfortunately termed "Eminent Persons Group" and in that capacity I saw quite a lot of Pik Botha.

I mention

this because, although I expect to be seeing Sir Robin Renwick at some stage during the visit, if you think that there is anything that I ought to know, or any points that I could usefully make, before I see Pik Botha, perhaps you would let me know.

I may and be seeing Mandela agcain.
