RECOV

Dear Alan,

SECRETARY OF STATE'S VISIT!

1. You will recall that not much of substance, and almost nothing other than straight commercial matters, came up during my session with the Secretary of State during his call at the Trade Commission. Since we were talking in front of a largish audience it did not seem appropriate for me to try to broaden the discussion! Therefore I was not told then, nor at any other point during the visit, whether, for example, the Secretary of State had taken any further with the Hong Kong Government the quest for a Consulate General building, or, even whether anything was said to the Governor or other members of the Hong Kong Government about the failure of the Hong Kong Government to include a single British firm in the shortlist of eight for the consultancy for the airport master plan (my telno 10), to take but two subjects in which we are closely involved.

2. I hope therefore that you will find it possible to send me copies of the records of any such discussions. The more we can see, even if on a strictly personal basis, the more I will know how to play our cards here. Also copies of the relevant briefs would be helpful.
