Secretary of State's overseas travel

2f

The Secretary of State was grateful for the suggestions for his overseas travel next year as set out in the PUS's minute of 2 October.

The Secretary of State's ideas are as follows:

early January

late January

February

early March

Easter Recess

The Secretary of State would like to make a brief visit to the Gulf, probably going only to Saudi Arabia and Bahrain (perhaps from 12-15 January) but this would be for decision nearer the time. Mrs Hurd would not accompany the Secretary of State on this visit. Perhaps Protocol Department could explore the logistics. It might make sense to travel commercially to/from Saudi Arabia and Bahrain and charter an aircraft for travel between the two and within Saudi Arabia.

The Secretary of State would like to visit Turkey and India, probably leaving London on 27 January. If the Anglo/German Summit goes ahead on Friday 1 February, the Secretary of State would have to get back for that. If not, he could return on the Friday evening or even over the weekend. Whether he visits India will obviously depend on the political situation at the time. But you may at least like to alert the Embassy in Ankara and the High Commission in New Delhi. They should not approach their governments for the time being. A VC10 would be required.

Anglo/German Summit Anglo/French Summit

Bilateral visit to Lisbon

Anglo/Italian Summit

The Secretary of State thinks this is about the right time for a visit to China and Hong Kong, probably between Monday 1 April and Tuesday 9 April. You may wish to alert the posts but no dates should be put to the Chinese government for the time being.
