I do not underestimate the difficulties of the next decade.
Iean give you this assurance. Britain will be unceasingly active
in defending and promoting Hong Kong's interest in any way we can.
Our aims will be:
- to maintain the security and prosperity of a uniquely gifted
and resourceful people;
- to bring about the successful transition of Hong Kong from a British Dependent Territory to a Special Administration Region of
China;
These are the challenges in the years ahead. We shall pursue them
energetically. I am confident that Hong Kong will do so as well.
