1. Mr Maude would be grateful if you could brief him on the contingency plans which exist for the highly improbable eventuality of a Chinese use of force in respect of Hong Kong. He assumes that papers exist on this and that they are updated as appropriate. He would like to look at any such papers in the office on Monday 8 January.
