CLAIMS BY HONG KONG RESIDENTS FOR COMPENSATION FOR JAPANESE MILITARY CURRENCY
1.
BTC Hong Kong has requested advice to answer enquiries from Hong Kong residents holding large amounts of military currency issued by the Japanese authorities during the Second World War.
2. The Japanese Consulate has taken the line that this matter was settled by the 1951 Peace Treaty. I assume this
would also be our attitude. I attach some related correspondence. The letter from the Reparation Association Hong Kong received a deadpan reply from Tokyo.
3. I also attach a draft reply. I would be grateful for your comments which Mr Rankin has agreed to coordinate.
