Asahi Shimbun Interview with Sir David Wilson: 30 November 1990

Hong Kong's Economic System will not change

The route into China even after return in 1997

Sir David Wilson told us that Hong Kong's economic system will

not change even after 1997. Hong Kong will continue to be a

trade and financial centre for Asia and a channel for economic

exchanges with China. Even after 1997 it has been agreed

internationally that Hong Kong will preserve its economic, trade,

financial, monetary and legal system, he said. Compared with the

other Asian NIES Hong Kong has the advantage of linking China

with the world. Sir David said that economic growth this year

was likely to be under the 2.5% forecast. This was a temporary

phenomenon caused by the downturn in the US and the Gulf crisis,

but Hong Kong had great adaptability to external circumstances.

As for Japanese investment in Hong Kong, it was growing faster than Japanese investment in the US. Hong Kong's financial needs

for infrastructure etc are large and Hong Kong welcomes Japanese

investment.
