Dear Sir or Madam,

MAURICE MACARTNEY

41 BEECHWOOD AVE. BANGOR

CO. DOWN, NI

I am writing to express my concern over a matter reported in the "Independent" newspaper, Monday 23rd July. The article reparts the British Governments' prosecution of the members of Hong Kong's united Democrats party for using landhailers

and collecting money during peaceful demonstrations. If the defendants find it

to appeal to the privy Council, l would like to voice my support for that appeal. Whilst I am aware that the invoking of the particular laws involved does not technically constitute an infringement of civil liberties, I feel that perhaps undue attention has been paid to Chinese demands for a clampdown on "subversives".

Yours faithfully

Mawice Macartney
