Dr
Thank you for your letter of 30 July to Tristan Garel-Jones enclosing one from your constituent, Christopher Timmis of 54 Waxwell Lane, Pinner, Middlesex, HA5 3EN, about the prosecution of certain individuals in Hong Kong under the Summary Offences Ordinance. I am replying since I now have responsibility for Hong Kong at the Foreign Office.
The cases referred to in Dr Timmis' letter are sub judice and we cannot comment on the particular circumstances you quote.
Nevertheless, the laws under which charges have been brought are the laws of the Hong Kong Government. The decision to prosecute was taken by the Hong Kong Attorney General. It must be for the Hong Kong Government to handle these cases as they see fit, in accordance with Hong Kong law.
