Hong Kong Progressive Society
1990
Formed after the signing of the JD. Purported primary
objective is to support the implementation of the JD and to
maintain social stability and economic prosperity of Hong Kong
before and beyond 1997. Identified as "moderates" in their
views on the political structure of the HKSAR. More interested
in practical politics than the Basic Law. Closely identified
with Maria Tam, Executive and Legislative Councillor. Has
established
fairly wide district network of contacts at the
grassroots among ot those with conservative, moderate Or
independent political outlook. Has been supporting candidates
contesting elections to the municipal councils and the district
boards. Main interest is political development but its role in
the 1991 direct elections to Leg Co still unknown.
Hong Kong Foundation
Formed in March 1989 with Legislative Councillor Allen
Lee and Stephen Cheong as its subscribers. According to Cheong,
the Foundation would not have any political leaning. Sole aim
is to work for HK's economic prosperity. Separately, Cheong has
been said to be organising
be organising a political group of a number of
Leg Co members and businessmen to prepare for elections to
Leg Co. HKD10 million has been raised to fund both the HK
Foundation and its future political group.
However the
direction and activities of the Foundation have been somewhat
nebulous. It shares some potential membership with the New Hong
Kong Alliance.
