Thank you for your letter of 11 October enquiring about the possibility of providing assistance to HMOCS officers wishing to find jobs in the UK after 1997.

I understand that the Director of Special Branch in Hong Kong is in touch with a number of UK authorities with a view to finding alternative employment for Special Branch officers. In the first instance, therefore, it would be advisable for you to discuss this matter with the Director, who will know what opportunities there are likely to be available to you.

As far as employment with the Foreign Office or other Government Departments is concerned, recruitment is currently done through the Civil Service Commission, and this will be the case until April next year. All applications are therefore made to the Civil Service Commission. The Foreign : Office does, however, recruit some of specialist staff itself, such as Legal and Economic Advisers, and applications for these are made to the Recruitment Section of Personnel Policy Department.

With regard to employment in the UK private sector, there are many professional and executive recruitment agencies who operate on a license issued by the Government. It would be advisable for HMOCS members to contact several of these agencies with a view to employment in a professional capacity.

Finally, if any member of HMOCS wishes to be considered for employment in other Dependent Territories, they can register themselves with the Overseas Manpower Department of the Overseas Development Administration at the following address:

Abercrombie House Eaglesham Road

East Kilbride SCOTLAND
