Malaysia to consult ASEAN on Cambodian problem (Excerpt) Malaysia will consult with its ASEAN partners to reach a common position regarding Vietnam's announcement that it will withdraw its

troops from Kampuchea by the end of September, a senior wisma putra (foreign affairs) official said [on] Thursday [20th April].

Foreign Ministry acting Secretary Gen Abdul Majid Mohamed said Malaysia wanted ASEAN to evaluate the Vietnamese proposal and reach "further ideas" on a Kampuchean settlement within the framework of the second Jakarta Informal Meeting (JIM 2). “Malaysia wishes to see that any action on withdrawal or settlement be within the framework of the comprehensive solution outlined in the chairman's consensus statement at JIM 2," he told a press briefing. . . Kim Il-sung sends message to Sihanouk on DK national day The North Korean president Kim Il-sung sent a message of greetings on 16th April, National Day, to the President of Democratic Kampuchea Prince Sihanouk, which was broadcast by the radio station calling itself the Voice of Democratic Kampuchea on 20th April (in Cambodian 2330 gmt). The message expressed "firm solidarity" with the Prince and "the firm conviction" that Korean-Cambodian relations would “further strengthen and develop".

Thai lecturers in Laos Gen Sisavat Keobounphan, mayor of Vientiane prefecture, on 19th April welcomed to Vientiane a group of Thai lecturers led by Prof Kamon Thongthammachat, head of the department of political science, Chulalongkon University. The Thai group's aim is to exchange views on educational, cultural and socio-economic fields with the Lao side. (KPL in English 0922 gmt 20 Apr 89)

CHINA AND TAIWAN

Alleged murderer extradited from China to Taiwan via Singapore (Excerpt) A man accused of committing a murder in Taiwan Province was extradited from China and handed over to Taiwan police in Singapore by three mainland policemen today [21st April]. The mainland police escort handed over the alleged killer, Yang Ming-chung, to Singaporean police at the arrival gate of the flight CA 977 of the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC). The wanted man was then taken into custody by Taiwan law enforcement officers for return to the island. This is the first time that police from the mainland and Taiwan Province have co-operated with another country to arrange the extradition of a criminal... (Xinhua in English 0141 gmt 21 Apr 89)

Taiwan IOC representative arrives in China for gymnastics championships (Text) C.K. Wu, the International Olympic Committee [IOC] member of Chinese Taipei, arrived here this evening [Peking, 19th April]. Mr Wu came as one of the two representatives nominated by IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch for the upcoming Asian junior gymnastics championships. The other representative is IOC executive board member He Zhengliang of China. The championships, which will be held here during 21st-23rd April, draw seven teams, including one from Chinese Taipei. Koreans in Japan open joint ventures in Pyongyang The Korean joint venture bank opened in Pyongyang on 20th April. The bank will ensure the bank business of the domestic joint venture companies and undertake bank services for the convenience of the Koreans in Japan who visit the homeland and international banking business (KCNA in English 1512 gmt 20 Apr 89). The first meeting of the Council of the Korean joint venture bank took place in Pyongyang on 20th April. It agreed on the structure and function of the bank, a working plan for 1989, the budget, etc. Chon Yon-sik, Vice-Chairman of the Chongnyon [General Association of Korean Residents in Japan] Central Standing Committee, was elected managing director (KCNA in English 1600 gmt 20 Apr 89).

The Pyongyang packing materials joint venture company has been commissioned. It will produce packing materials for light industrial goods, including aquatic products and foodstuffs. This company is jointly managed by the Pyongyang foodstuff complex and the West Tokyo Company under the West Tokyo headquarters of Chongnyon. (KCNA in English 1555 gmt 20 Apr 89)

Chinese technology delegation in Pakistan Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto received a five-member Chinese delegation led by Zhou Ping, Vice-Chairman of the State Science and Technology Commission, on 19th April. Pakistan and China signed a protocol in Islamabad on 20th April for co-operation in the field of science and technology. The Federal Minister for Science and Technology, Mr Jahangir Badar, and Zhou Ping, signed the protocol on behalf of their countries.
