It is believed that in the future even more Hong Kong people will be taking an interest in overseas financial and business affairs. To meet these needs reporting on these subjects will be increased with satellite reports from North America and Europe being transmitted several times during the broadcast day. These will supplement the financial service of Reuters, UPI, etc. and will be translated and edited for immediate broadcast. Demonstration tapes are currently under consideration from a US satellite news service. These have been prepared specially for the Hong Kong audience. These services will augment the intensive coverage of local business and stock news currently being broadcast.

This trend to serve special groups and their needs through radio will be accelerated by the rapid advances in technology in other fields such as in cable television, direct broadcast satellite and the growth in the number of video cassette recorder-owning households.

The widespread use of cellular telephones is already making effective changes to traditional ways of reporting news and traffic information. On the other hand, this trend is also altering the whole concept of exclusive radio rights to broadcast major sporting events and alternative ways of providing effective sports coverage may have to be found.

These changing factors make long term development plans which project programmes in detail almost impossible to prepare with accuracy. However, long term development of programme schedules in terms of broad principles and programme categories is a valid challenge particularly when a broadcasting station has twenty nine years of experience of serving Hong Kong radio listeners as is the case with Commercial Radio.
