1.5 The people interviewed

The survey comprised 1,480 interviews, forming a representative random sample of the population aged 13 and over in Japan, some 98 million people. All the interviews were carried out face-to-face in the respondent's home.

The demographic composition of the sample is shown in the chart below.

The sample was divided equally between men and women. Just under three in ten were aged between 13 and 19, and the same proportion were aged over 50. Eight in ten had at least secondary level education, and two in ten, higher education. One-half lived in large cities, and three in ten in small towns or rural areas.
