BBC WORLD SERVICE: FOLLOW-UP TO REVIEW OF THE FAR EASTERN SERVICE

1.

You should already have received a copy of the summary record of the meeting held on 2 August. Could I now ask you to look over the attached draft Broadcasting Assessment (s) (a standard form setting out information relevant to each vernacular which can be used as reference material for other meetings about BBC World Service matters,

e. g'

the annual review of the WS Prescription). I should be grateful for any comments, additions or amendments you may wish to propose not later than Friday 18 August. 2.

I have as yet been unable to complete the draft assessment for the Mandarin and Cantonese Services as I lack detailed returns from Peking and BTC Hong Kong. I fully realise that Peking are still trying to get back to normal after recent events, so I shall refrain from harrying them for a while. I have sent a reminder to BTC. They were pretty dismissive of the whole exercise (their telno 339), but we still need their input to round things off.

3.
