I:
HONG KONG AND THE IVORY TRADE
1. WHY DID UK ABSTAIN ON CITES RESOLUTION ON TRADING IN EXISTING
STOCKS?
- As Hong Kong can only take part in CITES under UK umbrella, Hong
Kong members of UK delegation allowed to put Hong Kong's case for
continued trade in legal stocks at last month's CITES Conference.
- UK abstained on behalf of HK. Similarly, Portuguese abstained on
behalf of Macao.
2. WILL HONG KONG SUPPORT CITES BAN ON TRADE IN IVORY?
- Hong Kong has always abided by CITES rules.
3. WHAT ACTION WILL BE TAKEN TO COMPENSATE/HELP IVORY TRADERS IN
HONG KONG?
- Hong Kong Government now studying what can be done to alleviate
difficulties for those employed in ivory trade.
4. HOW EFFECTIVE ARE HONG KONG'S CONTROLS AGAINST ILLEGAL TRADE IN
IVORY?
Hong Kong authorities have taken number of measures to strengthen
controls. All ivory has to be registered and marked. No ivory may enter or leave Hong Kong without being fully documented.
- Special customs task force established earlier this year to
enforce measures against illegal ivory trade.
