Each year I organise, under the sponsorship of Dr. Stanley Ho, a leading local philanthropist, a television programme, 'Varsity Challenge' wherein local undergraduates take part in a debate with their opposit numbers from other universities abroad.

This year I would like the overseas team to come from Britain, in part as a move to improve Anglo/Hong Kong relations. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office see no objections and, from my own observations, the best source of a British debating team would be Durham. Having watched the undergraduate body during the seminar with the Chinese Ambassador earlier this year and also having conducted my own seminars with them on oriental and business studies, I think they are just what we need.

Dr. Ho has agreed his sponsorship but, at this stage, I can only ask for agreement in principle and some dates when such a visit to Hong Kong would be feasible. Upon receipt of your reply I, together with Radio Television Hong Kong, will discuss arrangements with the local tertiary education institutions (the Hong Kong team will be territory wide) and then I must get air line sponsorship for the journeys to and from Hong Kong.

Usually the visiting team comprises four together with one reserve, a manager and a coach. We provide board and lodging here together with an entertainment programme.

As I am going to Britain on 15th December I would be gratefull for your reply before then if possible.
