HONG KONG: INTERVIEW WITH ABC'S "GOOD MORNING AMERICA"
(131)
1.
The Secretary of State has agreed Mr Osborne's recommendation
that he should give a live interview to the American breakfast show
"Good Morning America" on Monday 10 July. He will need to be in the
ABC studio at 8 Carburton Street, W1, no later than 1200. He will
go on the air at approximately 1206. The interview will last about
7 minutes. The interviewer will be Joan Lunden.
2.
The interview will have to be down the line and through an
earpiece, but as I recall it, ABC's arrangements worked a great deal
better than those of NBC in Washington, and I hope that the
Secretary of State will bear with the technology!
3. The interview will be on pretty straightforward lines and
presents an opportunity to explain our position on the Joint
Declaration, basic law, right of abode, international help etc. I
have arranged, however, for the main researcher to telephone me over
the weekend. I will then be able to go through issues and establish
what particular points are likely to be put to the Secretary of State by ABC. I will brief the Secretary of State on Monday as we
go up to the studio. (You will recall from our last experience that this can be a slightly slow process.)
