Northern Ireland:
PBS carried a reasonably balanced documentary "Death of Terrorist" which examined the legal, moral and political dilemmas facing HMG in dealing with terrorism in Northern Ireland. Newsday, the Long Island daily, carried an interview with Peter Maas, who peddled his usual pro-Noraid line. On the Irish-American front, the New York Post ran a biased article on the 7th anniversary of the incarceration of Joe Doherty echoing Noraid propaganda themes.
NATO:
CSIS conservative economist and columnist, Paul Craig Roberts, considered whether Europe was drifting towards a "Soviet honey trap" as Americans lost the battle for Europe's soul. Washington Post analyst, Jim Hoagland, disagreed arguing that Bush's "beyond containment" strategy was in fact a clever attempt to manage the German problem which was already paying off.
Reagan's Visit to London:
Ronald Reagan's visit to Britain and his speech to the English-Speaking Union attracted considerable coverage in the east coast press and on network and local television. The award of an honourary knighthood was warmly received as a gracious gesture and got considerable photographic coverage in the east coast press.
1992:
The Wall Street Journal interpreted the remarks of the Deputy Governor of the Bank of England as a "crack in HMG's fierce opposition" to European monetary union. The Journal also carried a profile of Jacques Delors.
Embassy Garden Party/Anniversary of Royal Visit to Hyde Park
The Embassy Garden Party in honour of The Queen's official birthday was positively reported in the Washington Times. The opening of the exhibition and ceremonies commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Royal Visit of 1939 to Roosevelt's home at Hyde Park (attended by HMA) attracted good coverage in the New York Times and local Hudson Valley newspapers.
