Britain has traditionally performed well in Hong Kong's project sector: including the Castle Peak Power Station, the Town Gas Plant, the Mass Transit Railway, and the electrification of the Kowloon-Canton Railway.

In 1988 20 British trade missions visited Hong Kong. There were eight DTI sponsored joint ventures at international exhibitions, and one promotion of British Consumer Goods.

(b) EDUCATIONAL

Joint Funding Scheme was set up in 1983 to support the tertiary education of deserving Hong Kong students in the UK. It is equally funded by HMG/HKG and has a total budget of £4 million per year. Since 1983, 8,125 student places in the UK have been awarded under this scheme.

The UK/Hong Kong scholarship scheme, which started in 1988, has a budget of £250,000 per year: FCO contributes £40,000; £85,000 comes from a private bequest; £125,000 from the Hong Kong

Government.

Will support 7 or 8 of Hong Kong's brightest students

per year for undergraduate/postgraduate studies.

DIPLOMATIC/POLITICAL

As a mark of the importance we attach to Hong Kong, post of Senior British Trade Commissioner was recently upgraded to Ambassadorial grade.

British Joint Liaison Group Office established in Hong Kong in July 1988.

Planning already in hand for establishment of British Consulate-General in Hong Kong after 1997. Will be a significant and large post. HMG determined to maintain strong diplomatic, economic and cultural links with Hong Kong after 1997.
