UK-HK SCHOLARSHIPS 1989 SELECTION
The interviews went off quite well again this year. There were over 200 applications which preliminary weeding by an academic brought down to 37 people for interview. Nine candidates have been selected as obviously qualified for an award, some of them are very good indeed. Their backgrounds are wide. Regrettably there is only one postgraduate selected. The standard of the postgraduates who applied this year was generally not good. This will make it difficult to absorb the unspent funds from last year. However, there are six good runner up undergraduates from which it should prove possible to add one or two more to our list. The Secretariat are doing the calculations on how we need to manage the unspent funds in order to finance the three undergraduate years. They are also asking the Jockey Club if they will deposit their unspent money from 1988/89 to assist with future funding.
I am grateful for the Department's (or was it CRD's) telno 9. I think I have finally got the point over to HKG and am only sorry that the dearth of post graduate applicants has prevented us from producing a better result.
