1. I see that the Minister of State is lunching with the Directors of John Swire & Co. on Wednesday 13 December.
2. A small point but Mr Maude may like to know that I have been corresponding for some time with Mr John Swire (Hon. President of the company) about a scheme co-sponsored by Swires and the FCO to bring two or three Hong Kong postgraduate students a year to do Master's degree courses at University College, Oxford, of which
John Swire is an honorary Fellow.
3. This scheme is part of our programme of jointly funded scholarships for overseas students, which operates within the framework of the FCO Scholarships and Awards Scheme. For Swires it would be an extension of their existing £250,000 pa sponsorship of scholarships at Univ and other Oxford colleges for (mostly undergraduate) students from Hong Kong, China, Japan, Korea and Mauritius. The new scheme now looks unlikely to get under way
before October 1991 due not to any lack of enthusiasm on Swires'
part, but rather to University College's rather dreamy approach.
