Committee of Management Report 1987-1988

Royal Marsden Hospital we are

considering how best to proceed to recruit a successor. As part of this process we are examining some important issues which bear on the Institute's future. Two of these, the relationship with the Royal Marsden Hospital and the Sutton site development are referred to later in this report.

We shall also be considering the management structure of the Institute. Our aim in all these matters is to build on the reputation achieved under Robin Weiss's Directorship by recruiting a new Director of the highest calibre to lead the Institute in a successful programme of scientific research.

On behalf of the Committee of Management I have pleasure in presenting for the year 1987-1988 my first report as Chairman.

The matters that concern the Committee of Management, and those that engage the minds of our officers, arise only because The Institute is a flourishing centre of science in the areas that comprise cancer research. In this connection, I commend to you the Scientific Report for the year which, for the first time, attempts to portray in one volume the work of both the Institute of Cancer Research and the Royal Marsden Hospital.

Meanwhile, with the help of the Cancer Research Campaign and the

The new positions opened up to the Cancer Research Campaign were taken up in October by Mr. R.D.C. Hubbard the Chairman of their Finance Committee, Mr. D. de Peyer, Director General, Dr. N.H. Kemp, Director Scientific Department, and Captain K.H. Mills, Director Appeals Department. Professor K.D. Bagshawe the Chairman of the Scientific Committee and of the CRC/ICR Joint Scientific Committee joined the Committee to replace Professor Turner-Warwick as a nominee of the British Postgraduate Medical Federation. A new Academic Board Chairman Dr. S. Venitt and Vice-Chairman Mrs. C.E.D. Chilvers joined the Committee in October. They were joined by Professor J.G. Hall, Professor K.R. Harrap, Dr. S. Neidle and
